Compound Crossfit..what has it done for me??

When I first joined Compound Crossfit I was 31, mother of 4 and pretty lazy. I liked to workout but I would get bored very easily at the traditional gym I was a member of. Almost all of my time was dedicated to shuttling my kids to and from their activities. I never really gave myself the time I should have. Like most moms, I put myself on the back burner and made my kids my #1 priority. The opportunity came to do a boot camp at The Compound, I figured hey why not..what do I have to loose, right. I was nervous and scared my first day there. The nervousness soon left and I found myself craving the workouts. The feeling of accomplishment I got from completing a workout I never thought I could do is very addicting. The motivation and support you get from not only the trainers but also from the other members is like no other. They make you want to do your hardest and best. Not only am I putting some time for me now, I am also showing my young kids how to live a much healthier lifestyle. The come with me to the gym and see mommy workout and eating better. So in turn they want to be more active and eat better foods. Going to the gym has become a family event for us. My husband, myself & our kids all go to Compound Crossfit and enjoy it very much. In a nutshell Compound Crossfit has been life changing for me. They have given me more confidence, more motivation, more strength (not just physically but mentally too) and a new reason to put myself first. Being a member of Compound Crossfit is empowering!

Hi, my name is Valerie, and I started doing CrossFit at the Compound around Thanksgiving 2008.  I found the Compound by chance when a friend researched to find a wedding fitness package.  My friend and I went to the Compound for our first workout and it was really hard, but there was a lot of encouragement and support from the instructors and members.  I was sore for about 4 days afterwards and my friend and I vowed that we would never go back.  After a few weeks and some encouragement from my husband, I decided to go back to the Compound because although it was hard work, I felt the camaraderie and team support were what I needed to reach my goal of not being a couch potato any longer.

I had been in ok shape several years before, but had a back injury that held me back from wanting to participate in physical activities.  I had spent thousands of dollars on chiropractic care, orthopedic doctors, physiatrists, steroid injections, acupuncture, and physical therapy, all in an attempt to heal my back.  I received a small level of pain relief from all of those; however, none have been as effective as the overall strengthening of my core from doing CrossFit at the Compound.  I’m not saying that all of those other things don’t work, they just didn’t work for me.  I was very careful with my back while learning to do the CrossFit exercises.  The scaling method used in CrossFit was very effective for me because it allowed me to work my way up and build strength along the way.  I was continually challenged and motivated by the instructors at Compound CrossFit, as well as the Compound members.  Everyone at the Compound shares in and celebrates each others’ accomplishments and achievements.

It sounds like an infomercial to say that Compound CrossFit has changed my life, but it really has.  I was really unhappy not being able to do physical activity and would avoid doing activities where I would have to stand or walk for extended periods.  I ended up working a lot, gained weight, and was generally unhappy not being able to do the things I once could do.  At 37, I wasn’t ready to accept that this was the way the rest of my life was going to be.  Since joining the Compound, I have lost about 15 pounds of fat, have gained a lot of strength, and have gained a new lease on life that helps me to deal with the ups and downs as they come.  I encourage anyone to try Compound CrossFit – the motivation, camaraderie, team spirit, instructors and members are simply awesome and will help you achieve your fitness goals.

My wife and I have been intermittently in to fitness our whole lives. Over the years, we have been members of various gyms including small local gyms, big nationwide chains, and even a "home gym" for a while. Although these options have pros and cons, there still remained one constant: which routines to do. We would easily get bored with the same routines and I was finding myself constantly searching for new routines. Luckily, a friend of mine suggested a website that posts daily workouts for free. That website turned out to be crossfit.com

This different approach to fitness is great. We love how the workouts differ from day to day, and how they incorporate the whole body in each of the workouts. While doing these Crossfit routines at the gym, I came across Compound Crossfit, an actual Crossfit gym with the appropriate equipment and others who were interested in doing the same thing I wanted to do.  My first workout at Compound Crossfit pushed me farther than I had ever pushed myself at the other gym and from there I was hooked. I simply had to just show up. No more checking a website, or even thinking about what to do, I just had to follow the workout written on the board and go home.

What is so great about the Compound is if you don't know how to do a particular exercise pertaining to the workout, a trainer is there to show you how to properly execute the lift. Doing the lifts right is particularly important to me, since at the time, I had lower back pain from lifting weights. Incidentally, my back pain has subsided since joining Compound Crossfit mostly I believe because of the focus on working your core.  My wife, Kelly, joined Compound Crossfit this summer, and loves it as well. Being new to Crossfit altogether, she appreciates the patience the trainers’ exhibit while working with her and their ability to scale the workouts for her as well.

Overall, we are both completely satisfied with Crossfit and especially satisfied being able to workout at the Compound. The trainers, as well as the other members, are always willing to help with form, motivation, diet, or any other questions we have. Like I said earlier, all you need to do is show up, and you'll get worked.

Ryan, Heather & Ben,

We enrolled boot camp 6 weeks ago and I just wanted to thank you you all, not only for the great work outs but the education.  Even though it is coming to a close this Saturday I am motivated to use what you taught us to increase and maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.

In high school and early 20's I was in good shape and strong for my size.  My father has always been into good nutrition and working out and taught us to make this a priority in our lives, too.  At 26 I started a career in massage therapy so strength, endurance and good health was a must.  Since moving to the USA from Canada I have been unable to work legally, and my motivation and strength dropped drastically. At the first class I was barely able to crank out one decent push-up.

The boot camp was a rude awakening into fitness and nutrition.  Originally my goal was just to lose the "newlywed 9" that I had put on since getting married in June.  Although I didn't quite accomplish that goal I gained a lot more endurance, strength, energy, and insight into the foods I should and shouldn't be eating.

I know me, and I know that in order to get things done I need to be pushed.  That is why this was a good fit for me compared to buying a gym membership and wandering it when I felt like it.  I enjoy running, but this class stepped even that up for me.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get into shape and needs to be motivated.  No, you won't drop 10 lbs in 10 days but it will give you an entirely different perspective on health, something you can take with you as opposed to dropping 20 lbs on diet pills and gaining twice that back in two months.  The best part is you don't need to buy the latest bow-flex, Ab-disc or P90X to get in shape.  A piece of equipment or DVD is not going to make anyone lose weight.  It'll most likely end up in a garage sale or eBay in 6 months.

What you offer is a relatively short but intense work-out that will push a person to their limit.  That is not something a gym or "magic" device can offer a person.

Thank you for taking the time to offer advice, suggestions, answer questions and encourage us.  Again, those are things we will be able to take with us and use in the future.  I have and will continue to recommend crossfit to everyone!
